Mentor Text 2: "When You're Trans, Living With Your Parents Can Be Complicated"

"When You're Trans, Living With Your Parents Can Be Complicated" is an informative cultural perspective written by Tori Truschiet of BuzzFeed. It overlooks the normal aspects of becoming a trans and dives deeper into the negative thoughts that parents bring once their children choose to switch. Oftentimes, parents will kick their kids out, and will NOT pay for surgery for these kids, leaving them financially hopeless. However, some kids are more than willing to work their asses off to recieve these surgeries, AND to buy their very own housing.

In the blog,it is mentioned how where these surgeries can take place are often the most expensive places in the country. The question then becomes, shouldn't there be more available? There's also the dilemma of travel expenses. That being said, on top of the surgery itself, the expenses to become a trans are more than what meets the eye. Even after all that, some parents are still unwilling to provide help and care for these children. Nonetheless, accept them for who they are.

One of the examples in the text was Frank Pena. Pena's mom kicked him out of his house for a simple haircut. His mom didn't let him leave with ANYTHING. That meant no phone, no food, no nothing. Pena took a strong approach to this. He began to have the idea that he was able to put all that hostility aside, and still love his family. His sister would support him, defending him from his mother who had a hard time accepting Frank for who he truly was.

The article really hits the nail on the coffin of the struggles a young trans kid might have. These kids face homelessness, expulsion, and financial doom. The author does a good job of brining awareness to the life changing struggles that a trans kid might face due to hostile parents and family.
